About
Gamelan Gita Santi offers instruction in traditional music from Bali Indonesia in the heart of the Indonesian-American community in South Philadelphia. Our instruments, a Balinese Gamelan Angklung, were made by Pandé I Wayan Sukarta in 2019. The instruments were named by one of our teachers, Indra Sadguna; Gita literally means "beautiful sounds, voices, and singing" and Santi means "peace".
This project is a three-way collaboration between Modero Dance, Gapura Philadelphia, and composer/performer Thomas Whitman. Teaching artists have also included I Nyoman Suadin, Indra Sadguna, and Putu Hiranmayena. Rehearsals take place at the Philadelphia Praise Center, 2300 S 18th St, Philadelphia, PA 19145.
